What happens in the finance office?

In the finance office, buyers review and sign all legal documents required to complete the vehicle purchase. The finance manager finalizes the purchase agreement, processes loan applications if you use dealer funding, registers the vehicle, and presents optional protection products like extended warranties or gap coverage for your consideration.

Document Finalization and Legal Paperwork

The primary function of the finance and insurance office is to finalize the legal transfer of the vehicle. During this stage, you will review the retail installment contract or the final buyer's order. These documents detail the total purchase price, itemized fees, state taxes, and the final out-the-door cost of the vehicle. The finance manager will guide you through the required state forms for title transfer and registration.

Accuracy is vital during this process. You must carefully verify that your name, address, and the vehicle identification number are correct on all paperwork. Errors in these documents can cause significant delays with the department of motor vehicles. Additionally, you will sign odometer disclosure statements and documents acknowledging the vehicle's condition, such as a Buyer's Guide or As-Is disclosure. Reading each document thoroughly before signing is a critical responsibility of the buyer.

Presentation of Optional Products

Another key function of the finance office involves the presentation of optional aftermarket products. Finance managers typically offer vehicle service contracts, commonly known as extended warranties, which provide coverage for specific mechanical repairs after the manufacturer's warranty expires. They will explain the coverage levels, deductibles, and the cost to include the contract in your transaction. You may also be offered Guaranteed Asset Protection coverage, tire and wheel protection, or prepaid maintenance plans.

According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, buyers should carefully evaluate these products based on their individual needs and the reliability of the vehicle being purchased. These optional products are entirely voluntary. You have the right to decline any additions you do not want. If you choose to purchase them, their cost will be added to your total loan amount or require an additional out-of-pocket payment. Always ensure that the final contract reflects only the products you explicitly agreed to purchase.
