Can I pay cash?

Yes, you can pay cash for a vehicle. Dealerships readily accept full payment without requiring a loan. When paying cash, you typically provide a cashier's check, a certified bank check, or arrange a wire transfer to cover the exact out-the-door price of the car.

Acceptable Forms of Cash Payment

Paying cash for a vehicle simplifies the transaction by eliminating the lender from the purchase process. However, dealerships rarely accept large sums of physical currency for security and administrative reasons. When a dealership refers to a cash transaction, they usually mean payment via a verified bank instrument. The most common method for a cash purchase is a cashier's check or a certified check drawn from your personal bank account.

You will first need to obtain the exact final out-the-door price from the dealership, which includes the vehicle price, taxes, and all applicable fees. You then request a check from your bank for that specific amount. Wire transfers are another widely accepted method for cash transactions. The dealership will provide their banking details, and you instruct your bank to send the funds directly. Wire transfers are highly secure, though they can sometimes take a few hours or a full business day to clear depending on the banking institutions involved.

The Transaction Process for Cash Buyers

Even when paying cash, you must still visit the finance office to complete the legal paperwork. The finance manager will process the title transfer, calculate the state taxes and registration fees, and generate the final buyer's order. You will sign the same federal and state disclosures required of all buyers. Cash transactions often move more quickly because there is no retail installment contract to review and no loan application to process.

You will not need to wait for a lender to approve the funding structure. However, the dealership is still required to comply with federal reporting laws regarding large cash-equivalent transactions. If you are trading in a vehicle with a positive equity value, that amount is deducted from the total price before you calculate your final cash payment. Once the funds are verified and the paperwork is signed, the transaction is complete, and you take ownership of the vehicle without any associated liens.
